Position Summary
The Biostatistician III (Senior Biostatistician) will serve as the methodological and programming lead for CVAUSA's real-world evidence and observational research projects. This fully remote, part-time role leads study and analytic design, independently authors statistical analysis plans and the statistical sections of grants and protocols, and functions as principal or lead statistician across projects conducted within the network's community cardiology practices.
This role is ideal for an experienced statistician who can set analytic strategy and standards, resolve novel methodological problems with full autonomy, provide statistical leadership and mentorship to the quality and research teams, and translate complex methods into rigorous, defensible evidence that supports high-quality, evidence-based cardiovascular care.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead study and protocol design and independently author statistical analysis plans and the statistical/methods sections of grant applications and protocols.
• Serve as principal or lead statistician across a portfolio of observational, registry, and real-world evidence studies in cardiovascular care.
• Design and apply advanced analytic strategies for observational data, including causal-inference methods (propensity-based weighting/matching, marginal structural models, instrumental variables, difference-in-differences, target-trial emulation), hierarchical/Bayesian methods, and predictive/machine-learning approaches as appropriate.
• Define analytic strategy, endpoint and phenotype definitions, and data-quality frameworks across multiple studies and real-world data sources (EHR, claims, registries).
• Serve as statistical lead and co-author on manuscripts.
• Respond to methodological critique from peer reviewers, sponsors, and regulators, and defend analytic choices.
• Mentor and provide technical direction to Biostatistician I and II staff and represent biostatistics in cross-functional and external settings, as needed and appropriate.
Qualifications
Required
• Master's degree (MS or MPH) plus approximately 5–8+ years, or a doctoral degree (PhD) plus approximately 2–4+ years, of applied biostatistics/epidemiology experience, ideally in a productive research environment that is generating work published in peer reviewed healthcare journals.
• Demonstrated expertise in advanced methods for observational and real-world data, including causal-inference and confounding-control techniques.
• Track record of independently authoring SAPs and statistical/methods sections of protocols or grant applications.
• Advanced proficiency in SAS and/or R, including reproducible-analysis and code-review practices.
• Advanced proficiency in SQL.
• History of methodological leadership and contribution to peer-reviewed publications.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate complex methods for non-technical audiences.
• Substantial experience in real-world evidence and observational research using EHR, administrative claims, and clinical registries.
Preferred
• Experience in cardiovascular research generally, and cardiac imaging (e.g., cardiac PET, myocardial blood flow, ANOCA/CMD) cardiac procedural (e.g., coronary angiography, PCI, catheter ablations) research in particular.
• Experience serving as statistician on grant-funded studies and interacting with industry or foundation sponsors.
• Familiarity with cardiovascular code sets (ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT) and CMS data structures and algorithms (e.g., Chronic Conditions Warehouse).
• proficient in power BI for data visualization.
• Experience mentoring or supervising statistical staff.
